Texture descriptor combining fractal dimension and artificial crawlers
Texture is an important visual attribute used to describe images. There are
many methods available for texture analysis. However, they do not capture the
details richness of the image surface. In this paper, we propose a new method
to describe textures using the artificial crawler model. This model assumes
that each agent can interact with the environment and each other. Since this
swarm system alone does not achieve a good discrimination, we developed a new
method to increase the discriminatory power of artificial crawlers, together
with the fractal dimension theory. Here, we estimated the fractal dimension by
the Bouligand-Minkowski method due to its precision in quantifying structural
properties of images. We validate our method on two texture datasets and the
experimental results reveal that our method leads to highly discriminative
textural features. The results indicate that our method can be used in
different texture applications.Comment: 12 pages 9 figures. Paper in press: Physica A: Statistical Mechanics

The web of federal crimes in Brazil: topology, weaknesses, and control
Law enforcement and intelligence agencies worldwide struggle to find
effective ways to fight and control organized crime. However, illegal networks
operate outside the law and much of the data collected is classified.
Therefore, little is known about criminal networks structure, topological
weaknesses, and control. In this contribution we present a unique criminal
network of federal crimes in Brazil. We study its structure, its response to
different attack strategies, and its controllability. Surprisingly, the network
composed of multiple crimes of federal jurisdiction has a giant component,
enclosing more than a half of all its edges. This component shows some typical
social network characteristics, such as small-worldness and high clustering
coefficient, however it is much "darker" than common social networks, having
low levels of edge density and network efficiency. On the other side, it has a
very high modularity value, . Comparing multiple attack strategies, we
show that it is possible to disrupt the giant component of the network by
removing only of its edges or nodes, according to a module-based
prescription, precisely due to its high modularity. Finally, we show that the
component is controllable, in the sense of the exact network control theory, by
getting access to of the driver nodes.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Online teaching and learning: a year later what has changed?
[EN] The world is currently experiencing the covid-19 pandemic that has been going on for almost a year and which has transformed the way of carrying out the economic activities that support contemporary societies. The education sector is precisely an example of this abrupt change. The face-to-face teaching-learning process was converted to an online format, so students, teachers, schools and families had to adapt immediately to this transformation. There was no time to provide schools and persons with digital equipment and tools, nor with educational agents for training oriented to the practice of online teaching. Everyone had to do their best, adapting, learning autonomously and with their peers and solving their own problems. This research was developed with the support of the case study methodology in a Portuguese educational institution and aims to understand, through the Dynamic Digital Competence Reference Framework (DigComp), the evolution of students in terms of digital skills in the period of the covid-19 pandemic. The results show that students acquired a set of digital skills that allowed them to participate and interact with stakeholders in the online teaching-learning process. In addition, a set of suggestions is also presented for the acquisition or improvement of other students' skills. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UIDB/05777/2020.Gonçalves, B.; Gonçalves, V.
